Background of the Study
Conversational discourse in family gatherings represents a microcosm of cultural practices and interpersonal communication. In Onitsha, Igbo family gatherings are marked by distinctive conversational styles that reflect the interplay of tradition, respect, and social hierarchy. These gatherings provide an intimate setting where language is used not only to exchange information but also to reinforce familial bonds and cultural norms (Okoro, 2023). The conversational patterns observed include the use of proverbs, respectful address forms, and context-specific expressions that are passed down through generations. Researchers have noted that such discourse is characterized by fluid turn-taking, negotiation of power, and the strategic use of silence and emphasis to convey meaning (Nduka, 2024). In these settings, the informal yet structured nature of conversation serves to mediate relationships, resolve conflicts, and affirm shared values. This study appraises the conversational discourse in Igbo family gatherings, analyzing how language functions to sustain cultural continuity and interpersonal harmony. By drawing on recorded interactions and participant observations, the research seeks to illuminate the unique linguistic features that define family communication in Onitsha (Okoro, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Although conversational discourse in family settings is fundamental to cultural identity, there is a lack of empirical research specifically focusing on Igbo family gatherings in Onitsha. Existing studies often overlook the subtle dynamics of informal conversation, neglecting the ways in which language reinforces familial roles and cultural traditions (Nduka, 2024). This gap in research limits our understanding of how conversational practices adapt to changing social contexts while maintaining traditional values. The study aims to address these shortcomings by examining the discourse patterns in family gatherings, with a focus on how language use supports cultural continuity and interpersonal relationships.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify key conversational patterns in Igbo family gatherings.

  2. To analyze how these patterns reinforce cultural values and family roles.

  3. To explore the adaptive strategies used in familial discourse.

Research Questions

  1. What are the dominant conversational features in Igbo family gatherings in Onitsha?

  2. How do these features contribute to cultural continuity?

  3. What strategies are used to manage conversational dynamics in family settings?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth appraisal of conversational discourse in Igbo family gatherings, shedding light on the cultural practices embedded in everyday communication. The findings will enhance our understanding of familial interaction, inform cultural preservation efforts, and contribute to sociolinguistic research. The insights derived will be beneficial for educators, cultural practitioners, and scholars interested in the intersection of language and family dynamics (Okoro, 2023; Nduka, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of conversational discourse in Igbo family gatherings in Onitsha and does not extend to public or formal communication contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Conversational Discourse: Informal, everyday communication between individuals.

  • Family Gatherings: Social meetings involving members of the same family.

  • Cultural Continuity: The preservation of cultural values and practices across generations.
